I've always meant to be a blogger. It is not that I have not been writing on the internet, it is just that I have never thought that I would have the discipline to write a blog. yet for the past three years I have been writing 2000 words every week for my sermon. Now things have changed as the Associate in the URC in Nairn I am only preaching every 4 weeks, and I miss the discipline of writing. So here goes.
Like most Christians I am very aware of just how poor my spiritual life actually is. I say my prayers sort of and sometimes, and do not make the discipline out of it that it should be. I suppose that it is a bit like writing a diary or even writing a blog. I've used all kinds of schemes to get it going, but like the parable of the sewer (Mtt. 13: 22) The
seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but
the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the
word, making it unfruitful. It was last Sunday I decided that I was going to have to get my act together. Matthew had given me Franciscan Daily Office and I often used it in my attempts to get my prayer life under control. So I started again.
We are, according to the lectionary the Franciscans use in the Kingdom season as we travel from all Saints tide to what I would know as the Sunday of Christ the king. We are reading that most difficult of books, Ezekiel. I had been getting twitchy Today I read Ezekiel 18: 1-13 and Ephesians 4: 7-16, and I was blown away. The Ezekiel passage to me seems to be speaking about two things, personal responsibility for our behaviour, and an indication of what kind of behaviour is demanded, of seeking justice and behaviour in relationships with God and humanity. The Ephesians reading is about grace and the gifts which we are given to build up the Church, and how the Church, the people of God works as a organic whole supported by love.
The Church as we know it is in big trouble. It is only as the people God seek to have that community of faith living together in true love that we can be the people whom we could be. In this blog I feel called to see how this goes, and even if anyone ever discovers it.
